Scratch 101
Beg · Virtual · All levels
Scratch teaches the same ideas as “real” programming—sequences, loops, conditionals, variables, and events—without typing or syntax. You'll use the stage, sprites, and blocks to create motion, looks, and sound, then combine them into control flow and simple data. By the end you'll design and build your own short game or animation and understand how those concepts carry over to text-based coding later.
Who it's for
- Young learners (roughly 8–14) who want to create games and animations
- Total beginners of any age who prefer visual programming first
- Parents or educators supporting kids in their first coding experience
What you'll learn
- The Scratch interface: stage, sprites, backdrops, and the block palette
- Motion blocks: moving, turning, bouncing, and gliding sprites
- Looks and sound: costumes, size, visibility, and playing sounds
- Events: when green flag clicked, when key pressed, and when sprite clicked
- Control flow: repeat loops, forever, and if/else conditionals
- Variables: creating them, showing/hiding on stage, and using them in scripts
- Broadcasting and receiving messages so sprites can coordinate
- Designing a project: planning sprites, behaviors, and win/lose conditions
- Building and sharing a short game or animation from start to finish
